Gua Sha
Using a smooth-edged tool, our professional will stroke your skin while they press on it. Guasha helps treat chronic pain all over your body and often done alongside other complementary treatments like acupuncture.

What Is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves using a smooth-edged tool to apply gentle, repeated strokes along the surface of the skin. The name itself tells the story — "Gua" means to scrape, and "Sha" refers to the redness or petechiae that can appear on the skin during treatment. Far from harsh, Gua Sha is a precise, therapeutic practice that has been used for centuries across China and Southeast Asia to treat pain, inflammation, and stagnation throughout the body.
How Does Gua Sha Work?
During a Gua Sha session, your provider applies a thin layer of oil to the skin and uses a smooth tool — traditionally made of jade, rose quartz, or buffalo horn — to stroke firmly along the muscles, meridians, and connective tissue. The pressure and direction of each stroke are intentional, following the body's energetic pathways to move Qi and blood that have become blocked or stagnant.
The stroking motion creates a controlled microtrauma just beneath the skin's surface, which triggers the body's immune and healing response. This increases local circulation, breaks up fascial adhesions, and stimulates the release of anti-inflammatory enzymes — effects that have been validated by modern research as well as centuries of clinical TCM practice.
At Oahu Central Earth Acupuncture, Gua Sha is frequently combined with acupuncture and cupping for a comprehensive treatment that addresses pain and stagnation from multiple angles simultaneously.
Gua Sha works on both the surface and the deeper structural layers of the body, making it effective for a wide range of physical and systemic conditions.

How Often Should You Come In for Gua Sha?
Like most TCM therapies, frequency depends on what you're being treated for and how your body responds.
For acute issues — a flare-up, sudden stiffness, or illness — 1–2 sessions close together can produce rapid relief and help the body recover faster.
For chronic pain or ongoing conditions, most patients benefit from weekly sessions initially, gradually spacing out to biweekly or monthly as symptoms improve and the body holds its progress longer between visits.
Because Gua Sha works especially well alongside acupuncture, your treatment plan will be customized during your first visit with Dr. Yang to make sure you're getting the right combination of therapies for your specific needs.
FAQ
FAQs
Answers to your frequently asked questions.
Will Gua Sha leave marks on my skin?
Yes, it's common to see redness or light bruise-like discoloration — called "sha" — after treatment. This is not a bruise and is not caused by broken blood vessels. It's the result of metabolic waste and stagnant blood being brought to the surface, and it's actually considered a positive sign in TCM. The marks typically fade within 2–5 days.
Is Gua Sha painful?
Gua Sha should not be painful. Most patients describe a warming, scratching sensation that intensifies slightly over tight or stagnant areas but is generally very tolerable. Your provider will always adjust pressure based on your comfort level and the sensitivity of the area being treated.
Is Gua Sha the same as the facial Gua Sha I see on social media?
They share the same roots, but they are quite different in practice. The facial Gua Sha popular on social media uses very light pressure for lymphatic drainage and skin rejuvenation. Clinical Gua Sha uses significantly more pressure and is specifically therapeutic — designed to address pain, inflammation, and energetic stagnation in the body. At Oahu Central Earth Acupuncture, we also offer facial acupuncture for skin health and rejuvenation goals.
Who should avoid Gua Sha?
Gua Sha is safe for most people, but it is not recommended over broken, sunburned, or irritated skin, varicose veins, or areas with active rashes or wounds. It is also used with caution for patients on blood thinners or those with certain clotting disorders. During your initial consultation, Dr. Annie will review your health history to ensure Gua Sha is appropriate and safe for you.
