What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is a core pillar of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a written history spanning over 2,000 years. It involves the use of carefully selected natural substances — roots, bark, seeds, flowers, leaves, and minerals — combined into precise formulas designed to address each patient's unique pattern of imbalance. Unlike Western herbal supplements, which typically isolate a single active ingredient, Chinese herbal formulas are complex, multi-ingredient prescriptions where each herb plays a specific role — some addressing the primary condition, others supporting the formula's effectiveness or protecting the body from potential side effects.
At Oahu Central Earth Acupuncture, herbal formulas are always prescribed individually, based on a thorough assessment of your health history, constitution, and current symptoms.
How Does Chinese Herbal Medicine Work?
During your consultation, Dr. Yang will evaluate your condition through the lens of TCM — assessing your pulse, tongue, and symptom patterns to identify the underlying energetic imbalance driving your health concern. From there, a custom herbal formula is selected or compounded specifically for you.
Herbs are prescribed in several forms depending on your needs and lifestyle:
- Granules — concentrated herbal powders dissolved in hot water, offering a convenient alternative to raw herbs
- Patent pills or capsules — pre-made formulas for common conditions, easy to take daily
- Topical preparations — herbal liniments, plasters, or creams applied directly to areas of pain or skin conditions
- Herbal compress — warm bundles of medicinal herbs applied directly to the body, allowing the moist heat to drive the herbal medicine deep into the tissue while simultaneously relaxing muscles and improving local circulation
Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture — where acupuncture initiates movement and balance in the body's energy system, herbs provide sustained, daily nourishment that reinforces and deepens those effects between sessions.
Chinese herbal medicine addresses both the presenting symptoms and the deeper constitutional patterns that make those symptoms recurring or chronic.

How Often Should You Come In?
Herbal prescriptions are typically reassessed at each acupuncture visit or every 2–4 weeks, depending on how your condition is progressing. Because your formula is tailored to your current state of health, it will often be adjusted over time as your body responds and your symptoms shift.
For acute conditions, herbal formulas may be prescribed for a short course of 1–2 weeks alongside more frequent acupuncture visits. For chronic or complex conditions, herbal therapy is often maintained for several months, with gradual tapering as the body stabilizes and holds its progress.
Dr. Annie will guide you through every adjustment, ensuring your formula continues to match exactly where your body is in its healing process.
FAQ
FAQs
Answers to your frequently asked questions.
Are Chinese herbs safe?
When prescribed by a qualified, licensed practitioner, Chinese herbal medicine has an excellent safety profile. Dr. Annie is a Doctor of Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine (DACM) with extensive training in herbal pharmacology, including herb-drug interactions and contraindications. It is important to always disclose any medications or supplements you are currently taking so your formula can be prescribed safely alongside your existing care.
Do Chinese herbs interact with medications?
Some herbs can interact with pharmaceutical medications, which is why a thorough health intake is always completed before any herbal prescription is given. Dr. Annie will review your current medications and health history carefully to ensure your herbal formula is both safe and effective for your individual situation. Never stop or adjust prescribed medications without consulting your medical doctor.
How do Chinese herbs taste?
Raw herb decoctions and granules have a strong, earthy, sometimes bitter taste that can take some getting used to. Many patients come to associate the taste with the relief that follows. If the taste is a barrier for you, capsule or pill forms are available for many common formulas. Dr. Annie will work with you to find a format that fits your lifestyle and preferences.
Can I take Chinese herbs if I'm pregnant?
Some Chinese herbs are safe and highly beneficial during pregnancy — in fact, herbal medicine has a long history of supporting maternal health, morning sickness, fatigue, and preparation for labor. However, a number of herbs are strictly contraindicated during pregnancy. Always inform Dr. Annie if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding so your formula can be prescribed with the utmost care and safety.
